Conair is really good and they're only $20-$30. Hot Tools is REALLY REALLY good but VERY expensive.

I have a Chi. They are expensive but it was worth every penny. I would rather spend extra money on something that works well.
I own a chi superstar -99.00 it has lasted over 4 yrs without fail and it gets super hot! I also own a yellow and gray iron called prosilk. I bought one for around 80.00 . It worked so well, I purchased another smaller one I found at a hairshow for only 25.00! I think you should be able to find one for as little as 60.00. If you are close to your stylist, start attending hair shows you can find the best styling agents for litte or nothing. You may not even need your stylist.
Chi is really good you can buy one on Ebay for less than 100 bucks. I bought mine on Ebay and also got the blow drier my hair is so curly it took me 2 hours to straighten it now it only takes me 30 mins at the most
CHI's are the best. They are pretty expensive but have a lifetime guarantee.
Get a Chi. They may seem expensive, but it's actually a deal. It would probably be more expensive to have to keep going out and buying new flat irons when your cheap one breaks. The Chi has a lifetime guarantee, and I've had mine for about 3 years, and I've never had a problem with it.
